The two most important features for a bar are discussed below.
The beads touching the beam are considered active beads, since their value is added to the soroban running total. Each bead represented in grey color shows that it is inactive (not touching the beam) and therefore, not contributing to the device running total.
As shown in the figure, each bead has its associated value. There are 5 beads in each bar. Since, no bead touching the bar represents zero, this is the minimum value a bar can have. Similarly, at most, a bar can have all of its beads touching the beam. Making the maximum beam value of 9 i.e. (5+1+1+1+1 = 9)
